Our Coaches

Good coaches exist in that intersection where time, passion and effort meet. And these days, a couple of others elements—communication and feedback—has been added to the mix. Any coach will tell you that it can be tough for everything to align.  Most are volunteers with a desire to give back to the sport, while juggling the endeavor with their own personal lives.

Luckily, the Newport Mesa Ice Kings organization is very fortunate to have some incredible and well-respected coaches who put in the time, passion and effort needed to help our players achieve success and have fun.  Importantly, they also have significant USA, Canadian and College-level hockey developmental experience at high competitive levels, and are certified and registered by USA Hockey .  Our coaches’ passion for ice hockey and teaching youth hockey is unsurpassed.

Meet our coaches:  Head Coach Lucas Romero, Assistant Coach Troy Mytinger, Assistant Coach Spencer Heichman, and Manager/Coach Brian Simko.

Coach Lucas Romero – Head Coach

Coach Lucas grew up in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.  At a young age, he was identified as an up-an-coming young hockey player out of the Southern California area. In high school, he was recruited from Orange County to Ontario, Canada to play for the Junior A level Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League.  He then went on to play NCAA college hockey for Westfield State University in Massachusetts.  Coach Lucas instills in our young players the key attributes of persistence, teamwork, self-discipline, camaraderie, and working toward a common goal.

Coach Troy Mytinger – Assistant Coach

Coach Troy grew up in Mission Viejo, CA and attended Mission Viejo High School.  When he was 16 years old, he moved to Ontario, Canada to play hockey for the Schrieber Diesels of the Superior International Junior Hockey League, and then on to the Junior A level Pembroke Lumber Kings of the Central Canada Hockey League.  After playing ice hockey in Canada for four years, he attended college at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Coach Troy focuses on the teaching our kids the defensive aspects of the game, as well as making sure that our team is in excellent physical shape for our games.

Coach Spencer Heichman – Assistant Coach

Coach Spencer grew up in Yorba Linda.  He earned a hockey scholarship to Quinnipiac University, providing him the opportunity to follow his dreams while continuing his education. Hockey has been a significant part of Spencer’s life growing up; being smaller compared to most hockey players, he quickly acquired a “never quit” attitude and gained an incredibly strong work ethic. Spencer has captained numerous teams he has played for, making him a great leader both on and off the ice. He finished his hockey career playing two seasons of professional hockey in Europe.
